By Inusa Ndahi, Maiduguri
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum and his Deputy, Umar Usman Kadafur on Saturday casted their votes at their respective polling units amidst cheers from supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
This is even as the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the ongoing exercise in many polling units as ‘a shame on democracy’, alleging that, it was characterized with manipulations, diversion of sensitive electoral materials for massive thump prints and votes buying by agents of government in the presence of security agencies and electoral officials.
Recall that this is the first time Borno is conducting Local Government Election after more than a decade, following atrocities posed by insurgents.
Zulum had on Friday during a statewide broadcast congratulated all participating political parties for playing the game according to the rules during the electioneering campaigns, with full assurance that the exercise would be conducted in a free, fair and peaceful atmosphere.
Meanwhile, the Governor while in Mafa to exercise his franchise commended the level of preparedness by the State Independent Electoral Commission (BOSIEC) and expressed satisfaction with the massive turnout of voters.
His Deputy, Umar Usman Kadafur also described the conduct of the exercise in Biu and other local government areas in Southern Borno as the ‘most peaceful and orderly’.
The Deputy Governor stated this in an interview with Journalists shortly after he casted his vote at his polling unit in Mbulamial primary school, Zarawuyaku ward of Biu Local Government Area.
But reacting to the development, the Publicity Secretary of the opposition PDP, Mr. Amos Adziba in a statement said, “The ruling APC, Borno State Government, State Independent Electoral Commission and some security agencies connived to rig the polls in all the 27 Councils.”
He cited an instance where a serving APC Member House Of Assembly in Askira Uba Constituency, Engineer Abdullahi Musa Askira and Mr Tarpaya Asariya, a Civil Servant And Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry Of Local Government And Chieftaincy Affairs, as well as Some Security Agencylies connived And carted away with sensitive materials including Ballots Papers/Boxes and Results Sheets to an Unknown destination to Thumbprints and fill in favour of the ruling APC.
Adziba also accused the ruling party for doing the same deal in other Local Government Areas of Kwaya Kusar, Shani, Hawul, Bayo among others.
“The APC are in collusion with State Independent Electoral Commission( SIEC), in which they have taken aggressive steps mostly through inducements, manipulation and incarcerations using the elements of state power including Nigerian police force and other security agencies.
“The SIEC must live up to its responsibilities to correct these anomalies, considering the fact that even the Governor came out publicly yesterday on a live broadcast that the polls should be free and fair, unfortunately the reverse is now the case today”. He lamented.
