Save Us from Herdsmen Attacks, Tiv Community Begs Nasarawa Gov

The Tiv community in Nasarawa State yesterday begged the state Governor, Abdullahi Sule, to save them from incessant attacks by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.

The community made the appeal in a statement issued to journalists in Lafia through the President of the Tiv Development Association (TIDA) in the state, Mr. Peter Ahemba.

The community leader regretted that for the past one week, suspected Fulani herdsmen have sustained unprovoked attacks on Tiv villages in Doma and Keana Local Government Areas, killing no fewer than 18 persons since the first attack on Ajimaka community in Doma LGA.

Ahemba said: “As I speak, more attacks are being launched. Our (Tiv) people are being slaughtered like animals. This is barbaric, and we appeal to the government to come to our rescue.

“Just last night, suspected herders attacked Tor-Abagi village, another Tiv settlement area in Keana LGA, and shot two persons; one died instantly and the other victim, Tyonyion Num, is currently hospitalised at the Keana General Hospital.

“Thousands of our people have been displaced as a result of these unwarranted attacks. What have we the Tiv people of Nasarawa State done to deserve these?”

The TIDA President, however, appealed to Sule to ensure the deployment of more security personnel in all the affected Tiv villages and in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps located in Kadarko, Agbashi, Agyaragu, Keana and Doma towns.

Ahemba also urged the state government to intensify more efforts towards restoring normalcy in the areas to enable the thousands of displaced Tiv people to return to their homes.
